Hello! I'm Kyle Helmer, a dedicated full stack developer with a inclination towards backend development. Graduated from SAIT in 2023 with a 3.7 GPA, I am egaer to dive into the dynamic world of software devlopment. My academic journey not only equipped me with a solid grasp of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) principles but also exposed me to the software devlopment life cycle, along with the methodologies that fit into that cycle.
This blend of theoretical knowledge and practical exposure has prepared me to navigate the challenges of modern software development. While my heart lies in backend development and the logical structuring of applications, I acknowledge the importance of frontend technologies in crafting an engaging user experience. I'm no stranger to frontend, and I enjoy creating seamless and visually appealing interfaces that bring projects to life.
Capstone project that I created with the help of my 3 other group members during my time at SAIT. Focusing on tax rates in both Canada and the USA, we developed an innovative solution designed to seamlessly process HTTP requests containing essential Postal or Zip codes. Upon receiving a request, our system meticulously analyzes the provided location and swiftly crafts a tailored response, delivering comprehensive details on the applicable tax rates for that specific area.
With a substantial dataset comprising over 1,700 entries for Canada and an impressive 42,000 entries for the US, the task of manually creating the necessary database entries seemed daunting. To streamline and optimize this process, I proactively sought out existing data files online, meticulously curated with the required information. To expedite the database population, I developed an efficient Java program tailored to generate the essential lines of text automatically. Saving significant time and effort.
After successfully implementing the original Tax Rate API, I recognized an opportunity to enhance the project by embracing more modern technologies. I felt that the initial stack we used was somewhat outdated compared to the cutting-edge solutions available today. In response, I decided to migrate our existing project to a Spring application with Hibernate as the ORM, leveraging its robust features and aligning with contemporary development standards. Increasing the scalability and efficiency of the application.
My personal portfolio, a demonstration of my web development skills using HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, and JavaScript. It's my first venture into Bootstrap, adding a touch of modern design to showcase my projects and abilities.
